DBS – Discovery Bible Study

The building blocks of disciple making movements are discovery groups, groups of open people studying God’s word together. The importance of these lie in the simplicity, reproducibility, and engaging transformation that comes through them. Discovery is when people are not told what to believe and do but the Holy Spirit teaches them (John 6:44) and conviction comes with the word. The DNA of immediate obedience and sharing with others is built into to process and therefore has the potential for rapid multi-generational multiplication. Here are the questions and directions to do one of your own…

Seven Questions – These questions frame and direct the meeting around God’s Word. Some call this structure “3/3s or Three Thirds” because there are three parts, look back (how the past days/week have gone), look up (what God is saying through the passage), and look forward (where you are going to integrate God’s word in your future through obedience and sharing with others). Here is the basic outline…
Looking back:
1 What are you thankful for? And Struggling with?
2 How can this group help meet one of these needs or serve someone?
3 How did you obey last week’s message?
Looking up:
READ the SCRIPTURE PASSAGE for today. Have everyone read it out loud, have everyone retell it in their own words. This gives time for impact and prepares to share and remember.
4 What does this teach us about God?
5 What does this teach us about people?
Looking forward:
6 How will you obey this passage?
7 Who will you share this story or message with?
